LeComte Opens Bayou Road to The Derby

16 Jan

A 13-race megacard topped off by the running of the Grade III, $200,000 LeComte Stakes for three-year-olds seeking to test the Kentucky Derby waters is on tap Saturday at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. The first of three local Kentucky Derby preps, culminating with the Louisiana Derby on April 4, has attracted a jam-packed field of 14 to contest its 1 1 1/16 miles trip around the main track.

Tepid favoritism lies with the multiple graded stakes placed Scabbard (7/2), who makes his season debut after a 4th place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Contention runs deep, however, with locally trained Lynn’s Map (6/1) and Mr. Monomy (9/2) exiting a 1-2 finish over this track on Dec. 21, and impressive maiden winner Sycamore Run (6/1), who will get tested for stamina after a runaway debut victory at six furlongs in the slop.

An invading contingent from Churchill Downs also figures to make its presence felt in Saturday’s feature, as Silver State (5/1) seeks to make amends for dropping his one-mile debut by a head last out. Fellow Kentucky-based shippers, Enforceable (15/1) and New Eagle (20/1) exit 2nd and 5th place finishes in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, respectively.

The 13th and featured LeComte goes to post at approximately 3:55pm Pacific Time, but there’s plenty of racing leading up to it, including four stakes races, which make up the Black Gold (Jackpot) Pick 5 and a $100,000 All Stakes Pick 4. The Black Gold 5 Jackpot stands at $208,660 heading into Friday’s program.

Here’s the stakes lineup for Saturday’s LeComte card at Fair Grounds:

9 – $100,000 Marie Krantz Memorial (1 1/16M Turf) – Black Gold 5
10 – $100,000 Louisiana Stakes (1 1/16M) – All Stakes Pick 4
11 – $125,000 Colonel E. R. Bradley Stakes (1 1/16M Turf)
12 – $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes (1M, 70Y)
13 – $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3, 1 1/16M)

Pleasanton OTB will take races 2-13 on Saturday’s program starting at 10:29am. OTB doors open at 9:45am.

Cal Cup Oaks & Derby at Santa Anita

16 Jan

The $200,000 Cal Cup Derby and $200,000 Cal Cup Oaks have drawn competitive fields of 8 and 10, respectively, and highlight a solid five-stakes program from the Great Race Place this Saturday. The nine-race card gets underway at 12:30pm.

The Derby features a clash between recent King Glorious Stakes winner Club Aspen and Northern California invader and Gold Rush Stakes winner, Bettor Trip Nick. Graduation Stakes runner up, Big Returns, also figures to take action despite being laid off since Del Mar. Gold Rush runners up, Indian Peak and Sacred Rider, also make the trip down from Golden Gate Fields to compete to see who’s the top Cal Bred sophomore heading into Derby season.

The Cal Cup Oaks has drawn a nearly full field of 12, led by our own Everett Nevin Stakes winner, Bulletproof One. She’ll face a still challenge from Golden Stakes Juvenile winner, Been Studying Her, and recent Soviet Problem winner, Cholula Lips. Smiling Shirlee and Warren’s Moon also exit off of 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the Soviet Problem behind Cholula Lips, respectively. With a competitive field of 12, the Oaks figures to be among the best betting races of the day.

The Cal Cup Derby and Oaks are carded as the 7th and 8th races, respectively, and will go to post at approximately 3:37 and 4:07pm. The undercard also includes three stakes races; the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint, the $150,000 California Cup Sprint, and $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic going 1 1/8 miles on the turf course.

Santa Anita’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot stands at $432,042 heading into Friday’s program. The Rainbow 6 Pick 6 can be played for just 20-cents and will be held over races 4-9 on Saturday.

Gulfstream Rainbow Nears $2 Million

9 Jan

Going into Thursday’s program, the Rainbow 6 Jackpot stands at $1.86 million. The Jackpot pays when there is one single winning combination in the 20-cent Pick 6.

On Saturday, Pleasanton OTB will pick up the Gulfstream Park card in progress, starting with its 4th race at 10:33am. The Rainbow 6 will be held over races 6-11, starting at 11:32am. Saturday’s card features a pair of Grade III races for older horses on turf, the $150,000 Marshua’s River (F&M) going 1 and 1/16 miles and $100,000 Tropical Turf at a flat mile.

With the $3 Million Pegasus Invitational just two weeks away, keep an eye on a mandatory payout announcement for the Rainbow 6, as Gulfstream typically likes to force it out on marquee race days, or the Sunday after.
