Opening Weekend at Oaklawn

23 Jan

The much-anticipated opening of the Oaklawn Park meet arrives Friday with a trio of nine-race programs on the docket opening weekend. As expected, the entry box is brimming with an average of 11.2 entries per race before scratches.

The stakes schedule commences with Friday’s running of the $150,000 Smarty Jones for three-year-olds going a mile. Saturday’s nine-race card features a trio of stakes, including split divisions of the $100,000 Fifth Season for four-year-olds and upward, also racing a mile over the dirt oval, and the $100,000 Pipin Stakes for fillies and mares travelling the same distance.

There’s no stakes on Sunday’s card, but because Oaklawn falls in the West Coast-friendly Central time zone (10:35am Friday, 11:05am post times Saturday and Sunday) that means we can import full cards virtually every day they run.

In addition to big fields, Oaklawn boasts the richest purses on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Key dates and Derby preps are as follows:

Monday, February 17 – $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3)
Saturday, March 14 – $1,000,000 Rebel Stakes (G2)
Saturday, April 11 – $1,000,000 Arkansas Derby (G1)

Don’t miss a minute of the action from the Hot Springs, Arkansas oval this winter and spring at Pleasanton OTB.
