Los Al Kicks off Two-Week Stand Friday

5 Dec

The Southern California circuit wraps up the year with a quick seven-day meet at Los Alamitos starting this Friday, and the entry box looks pretty good so far. Here’s the average field sizes, before scratches, for this weekend’s thoroughbred cards at the Cypress, CA oval:

Friday – 8 races, 8.37 (horses per race)
Saturday – 9 races, 7.22
Sunday – 9 races, 8.11

Ironically, Saturday’s numbers are hindered a bit by the race with the week’s highest purse, the $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (formerly the Hollywood, then Cash Call Futurity), which has draw a field of just four. But that’s good news for local connections of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up, Anneau d’Or (9/5), who’ll earn a check for just circling the oval. However, the Blane Wright trainee has a chance to do much better than that, given the big speed figure he earned in the Juvenile while out-finishing fellow rival Wrecking Crew by 3-1/4 lengths.

That leaves the Bob Baffert-trained duo of Thousand Words (8/5) and High Velocity (5/2) as the biggest obstacles to Anneau d’Or’s getting a graded stakes victory, after following just a head short to Storm the Court in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Thousand Words enters off a debut maiden victory while his stable mate comes in two-for-two, most recently winning the Grade III Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar.

The Futurity is carded at the 4th of 9 races on Saturday’s card. Los Alamitos will go to post at 12:30pm.
